Residential Asphalt Shingles vs Slate Metal Roof

Asphalt shingles are used predominately in Coquitlam and the Lower Mainland, whether it is a new roof or a reconstruction.  Considering that anytime a wind storm, rainstorm or hail storm goes through you are going to be replacing that asphalt shingle.

On the other hand, a metal roof or a slate metal roof is going to take any kind of storm you can throw at it extremely well.

If you used a slate sheet with that mottled look, that stamped pattern on the slate shingle roof, even if you had a golf ball or larger sized hail storm, the dents would go away and you would have a hard time seeing them.  In a small hail storm, any pot marks would get hidden on a slate shingle roof.

Roof Pitch

The steepness of a roof is called the roof pitch and is a term used in building construction. Roof pitch tells you how many inches the roof rises for every 12 inches in depth. A pitch of 6/12 means that the roof rises 6 inches for every 12 inches inward towards the peak or ridge.

Roof pitch matters to the type of roofing materials used for walkability, for proportions so the roof looks in sync with the rest of the building and combination of pitches which create distinctive roof shapes.

Roof pitches are most commonly between 4/12 and 9/12. Low -sloped roofs have a slight angle and are about 4/12 or lower.

Gutters

Today all residential and commercial roofs on buildings are required by regulations to have all rainwater carried away from the roof of the building.   All roofs are required to be designed with a fall towards a gutter that carries water to a downpipe which discharges the water to a drainage system.

PVC pipes or aluminum are the product of choice today for a complete gutter system installation.  They are required to be of a suitable size, strength and durability can be assured.

Leaves and twig blockage tend to be the biggest problem downpipes have due to their accumulation effect.  A screen system, also known as “gutter guard” can be added to the eaves and downpipes to trap these environmental problems from blocking your system.

Some say they are not as effective as you would like since they don’t gather smaller debris which gets stuck in the mesh and plugs the drainage system instead
